Is a tactical pack just a hiking pack with more webbing? Sort of. And that's the point.
I went into this genuinely curious, because the marketing language around this category is very different from the hiking one, and I wanted to know whether the engineering underneath was actually different too.
Mostly, it isn't ā and the Mardingtop is a clear illustration. Look at the carry system: a supportive padded waist belt, breathable back padding, side compression straps. Those are exactly the features that define a good 35L hiking pack, for exactly the same reasons. The waist belt transfers load to your hips so your shoulders aren't taking it all. The breathable panel keeps air moving on a climb. The compression straps stop a partial load from swaying. Physics doesn't change based on what a bag is called.
What is different is the exterior. MOLLE webbing means the pack accepts modular pouches anywhere on its surface, so you can position storage where your hand naturally reaches rather than where a designer decided a pocket should go. The advantage over sewn-in pockets is reconfigurability; the benefit is that the same pack serves a hiking trip in spring and a completely different loadout in autumn. Bottom gear straps carry a mat or a jacket externally, and there are multiple quick-access pockets for the items you want without stopping.
Thirty-five litres is a well-judged size ā enough for a long day with full weather kit or a light overnight, without tempting you to fill it just because the space exists. It's hydration compatible, which is the sensible way to carry water at this volume, and the durable polyester shell handles rough ground and being set down on gravel.
The hiking-to-preparedness versatility that owners describe is, I think, the accurate summary. This is a well-carrying 35L pack with a modular exterior, and that combination genuinely does serve both purposes rather than pretending to. If you want one pack that hikes properly and can sit ready as a kit the rest of the time, this is a sensible and affordable answer. Worth a look.
