I did not expect to get this enthusiastic about a hip belt

I'm not usually the person raising their voice about backpacking gear. But the FreeFloat hip belt on the Focal 58 does something so obviously correct that I've been slightly evangelical about it ever since I understood the mechanism.

Here's the feature: the hip belt is mounted so it can move independently of the pack body. The advantage is that when your hips rotate — which they do, on every single step, more so on uneven ground — the belt follows them rather than being dragged back into place by a rigid pack. The benefit is no repetitive rubbing across the same patch of skin for eight hours, and no hot spots at the end of a long day. That's not a comfort upgrade. That's the difference between finishing a trip and cutting it short.

Around that sits a genuinely lightweight 58L capacity with a ventilated suspended back panel and lightweight frame support. Air moves between you and the pack on a climb, and the frame still transfers load to your hips rather than letting it hang off your shoulders. Owners keep describing a balanced weight-to-comfort ratio, and that phrase is doing real work — plenty of packs are lighter, and most of them carry worse.

The pockets are excellent and I want to be specific, because pocket design decides how often you stop. A large stretch front pocket takes a wet fly or a shed layer without unpacking anything. Oversized side pockets hold full bottles you can reach while walking. Quick-access hip-belt pockets keep snacks and a phone at your fingertips. And it's hydration compatible for the days you'd rather sip than stop.

Compression and attachment points handle the rest — poles, a mat, a load that gets smaller as your food bag empties.
